The deceitful heart

Jeremiah 17:9:

9The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? -kjv

9 The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? -niv

Meditations:

1) The heart is the place where our thoughts arise and dwell, the place where  we make our decisions. The heart is also the place where our feelings arise and dwell. It is also the place where our thoughts and feelings interact.

2) The heart is described as deceitful. This means that sometimes we lie to ourselves. Even when we are able to justify our actions with reasons, the actual reason might not be what we think it is.

3) The heart is also described as desperately wicked. This means evil/bad thoughts are natural to it.

4) Who can know it? It means sometimes we don’t even understand ourselves.

  1. Very Good & so true Thai Shin. I like this so much I plan to use it tomorrow evening instead of ready scripture at our church board meeting. It will also be appropriate for the meeting we are having.

I trust you, Ellen and your son are doing ok. God bless!

  2. Our family is fine here my friend. Thanks for the comments. I’m glad that my reflections are useful

  3. thanks Thai Shin for sharing. Yes the heart is deceitful and desperately wicked, who can know it? Ever since the fall of mankind through our representative Adam, man has since not been able, nor is capable of doing good. We inherited the ‘original sin’. All our good works are but filthy rags and each of us has gone astray and departed from the Lord.

Gen 6:5 And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

The heart is not only described as evil, but evil continually. There is not a moment, left alone an unsaved soul, has the propensity to think nor to do good. Those things we did that we think are good, are but as filthy rags, fit for trash. This is total depravity.

But thanks be to God, he has given us Christ Jesus to be the Saviour of mankind. Those who trust in Him is now reconciled back to God. We no longer is under the curse, power and bondage of sin. This is Unconditional Election. He saved us without terms and conditions.

When God reaches out to a person, he cannot run away. God will bring him into his fold. This is Irressitable Grace of God.

God is pure and holy. While He is all powerful, He is not able, nor is capable to sin. He can’t, He is not able, and He detest sin. This is the complete opposite state compared to unsaved man.

Hence the Holy Spirit indwells in us. If you allow the holy spirit to guide your heart each day, you no longer need to fear the snare of sin. This is the power of the Holy Spirit.

Jud 1:24 Now unto him (God) that is able to keep you from falling (falling into sin and temptations), and to present you faultless (pure, sinless, perfect) before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,
Jud 1:25 To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.

Hence we can take comfort that God is able to preserve us if we continue to walk in His steps.

  4. thanks Sin Wei for your help to explain further
